Infinity symbol with three hearts on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A thin black infinity symbol with a small script letter in the right loop, and three filled hearts along the line in green, peach and blue. The linework is fine and even, with faint soft shading along the loops. Colour appears only in the hearts, set against the skin, and the design is centred on the inner wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marjorie had been sitting by the tombola for twenty minutes before anyone recognised her, which suited her fine. The hall smelled of floor polish and sausage rolls going cold on paper plates. Across the room, Dennis from the chemistry set was still wearing a yellow tie, or one exactly like it.

She had come for Sandra, really. Sandra had written in March on a card with a heron stamped in the corner, saying the three of them should be in one room before one of them got too old for the bell tower stairs. Only two had answered. Priya had sent a photograph of her grandson holding a trophy and a note saying the trains were a disgrace. Sandra's name sat on the list at the door, ticked, but she had not come through.

At half eight the caretaker propped open the side door to let in the cold, and Marjorie saw her under the fire exit sign with her coat still buttoned, looking at the room the way you look at a swimming pool before getting in. Marjorie crossed the floor. They did not hug. Sandra held up her wrist, where the thin black loop sat with its three small hearts, green, peach and blue, and said, "Still going, you see." Marjorie laughed, because they had all had them done in the same back room on Mill Lane the summer they turned eighteen, and had agreed it was daft, and had never once mentioned it since.

"Priya's not coming," Sandra said. "Her train was cancelled." Marjorie pulled out two chairs anyway and set them beside the tombola, one of them for the empty place, and they sat down together to wait for the urn, which was the only thing in the hall that had ever been reliably on time.
