The second-floor front room is ready for Tuesday, though the sea wind has got into the sash again and no amount of putty will stop it singing. Mrs Pargeter from the chemist's has asked after the room twice this week, so if you mean to take it you will need to write back by Friday.

As for the other business, your sister came to the door on Sunday with a silver ring on her finger and a notebook full of sums, and she would not say what the loop was for. I told her what I know, which is only that the boat Vellum went out on the Thursday tide and did not come back in until the Monday, with her mast snapped and her name scraped from the stern. Tilly Nance, who lettered the boats at the yard, rowed out with a lamp to meet her. Tilly never came ashore dry after that, and nobody has asked her why.

I have kept the shoe box of her things under the stairs. Inside is a pencil drawing of a figure eight lying on its side, and through the middle of it, in her looping hand, a single name run straight across so the strokes slip in and out of the curves. I have looked at it every evening since. It reads less like a sum now and more like a road a person might walk back along.

Anyway. Come on Tuesday and bring the good tea, not the shop brand. The room is yours either way.
