Mother and child line tattoo with red heart

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

The collage shows a close-up and a wider view of a small tattoo on a person's upper back. The design is an abstract mother and child in flowing black linework, with a child's head and arms curving within a larger outline. A small red heart sits to the upper left of the figures, and the pale skin and soft warm lighting keep the focus on the ink.

The last bus of the night pulled out of the depot at twenty past eleven, and Nell Harrower had the top deck to herself until Attercliffe. She kept the heater on low and left the wipers off, because the rain was fine enough to glitter under the streetlamps and she liked watching it turn to light.

At the stop by the shuttered bakery a woman climbed on with a child asleep against her shoulder, a small bundle in a grey coat with one trainer missing. The woman held out a card with unsteady fingers. Nell told her not to worry about the fare, the machine could wait. The woman sat near the front and bent her head over the boy, one hand cupped around his back as if the bus might throw him loose.

Nell watched them in the mirror all the way to the ring road. Her mother had ridden this route for thirty years, cleaning offices in the city centre, and had once told her that a proper hold looks like a letter you cannot quite finish, the loops leaning in towards each other. Nell had never understood that until she saw the woman's spine curve over the sleeping boy, like a question mark that had finally settled.

At the terminus the woman stepped down first, then turned and pressed something small into Nell's palm: a heart cut from a cereal packet, folded twice. "For the driver who waited," she said, and the doors hissed shut behind her. Nell kept it tucked in her cap all the way back to the depot, and when she peeled off her gloves she found the red card had left a faint print on her thumb.
