Kitten face tattoo on the top of a foot
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
A grey tabby kitten face covers the top of a foot, with the ears reaching toward the ankle and the whiskers extending beyond the cheeks. The fur is built from soft grey shading and fine dark strokes, while the eyes are filled with turquoise and the nose is pink. The photo is taken straight down on the foot against a grey tiled floor, with the toes and painted nails visible at the bottom of the frame.

Sit closer, the stove's only just drawing, and you'll not hear me over the water. Lean in the way the lock-keeper's girl did the winter she came aboard the Sorrel with a coal sack and a kitten inside it.

The kitten was grey as wet slate, striped across the forehead as if someone had raked her with a fork, and her eyes were the green-blue of a bottle held up to the sun. Captain Abel Crane named her Tuppence because she cost him exactly that, and he swore she could tell a lock was ready before the gates had moved. Every dusk she sat on the bow at Hythe Bridge with her whiskers out in the wind, reading the water like a letter.
That February the ice lay thick on the Kennet and we were frozen in at Newbury for six weeks. Crane's money ran out, and when a bailiff's man came down the towpath asking after a debt, Crane told him something unrepeatable and shoved him into the reeds. The man's pocketwatch went into the mud with him. Tuppence went after it across three hundred yards of ice, dragged it back by the chain, and laid it on Crane's boots like a receipt.
Crane never owed another shilling. The watch still ticks in the saloon, a little slow. So when you see her on the bow now, watching the gates, don't think she's only a cat. She's waiting to see whether you've paid your fare.
