Knitting nerd cartoon on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon girl with brown hair, round glasses and rosy cheeks holds knitting needles in one hand and a blue ball of yarn in the other, wearing a purple dress with buttons. The word KNITTING arcs above her and NERD sits below in black lettering. Bold black outlines and soft colour shading in purple, blue, brown and pink fill the design, which sits on pale skin.

The third row of the tea cosy had gone wrong again, and Marjorie Penhale pulled it back with a sigh that rattled the shed window. Outside, the runner beans had given up for the year, their canes leaning like tired men at a bus stop. The Parish Council had told her she could not enter the autumn show with anything knitted, since the schedule was for produce, not hobbies that happened to be indoors.

Her granddaughter Ffion had sent a picture of a cartoon girl with round glasses, rosy cheeks and a purple frock with four buttons, holding a ball of blue wool as if it might escape. Underneath she had written: nan, this is you. Marjorie had printed it at the library and pinned it above the workbench, and it had made her laugh until she had to sit down on the upturned crate.

On the morning of the show she carried the cosy in a carrier bag past the marrows and the prize onions and set it on the trestle beside the chutneys. The judge, a man in a green gilet, turned it over twice. Who made this? he asked. I did, said Marjorie, with two needles and a ball of blue wool I paid far too much for. He pinned a rosette to it marked Most Unexpected Entry, and she walked home with the scarf she had started that week wrapped twice round her neck, grinning like the girl in the picture.
