Landscape inside a heart on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A heart-shaped black outline frames a rural landscape with a row of dark pine trees, fields in the foreground and a cloudy sky shaded in blue, pink and yellow. The trees and fields are shaded with soft gradients, while the bold black border gives the heart a clean edge. The composition is centred and the colour is applied across the scene, with the heart sitting on the lower leg against a grey, textured background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had me hold the lamp while he knocked the last crumbs of old mortar from the opening in the novices' wall, and the dust settled on my sleeves like flour. "Mind the sill," he said. "Forty years nobody has cleaned it properly. The mason who cut it wanted a heart, and the abbot wanted a heart, and between them they got one."

It was a heart, black-edged in the stone, and through it the whole valley lay open. Dark pines stood along the ridge like a row of people waiting to be called in. Below them the fields ran down in strips: stubble gold near the wall, the rest greened over with rye. In the evenings the sky above the ridge went through every colour the brothers had no names for, blue first, then a pink that looked wet, then a yellow that burned along the edges of the clouds until the trees went black.

Anselm said novices were forbidden to stand at the window during Compline, and so every novice did. I stood there my first winter, counting the fields, and when I told him I could name only three he laughed and said that was three more than the abbot had ever managed.

When the abbot died, the house sold the upper pasture and Anselm was sent down to the town to keep the accounts. He left me the lamp and a rule written on the back of an envelope: keep the heart clean, and do not let anyone tell you the view is the same every night. I went up on the last evening before the lorries came and looked through it. The pines had not changed. The yellow had crept further along the cloud bank than I had ever seen it, and I stayed until the lamp burned down to nothing.
