Lion cub and script on the side
Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A pale, soft-edged cartoon lion cub is tattooed on the side of the torso, curled with its head turned slightly to the left. The cub is outlined in black and filled with light tan shading, with small touches of green on the face. Above it, black handwritten-style script reads kumbuka wewe ninoni, and the photo is taken close up against a green fabric edge.

The heron had stood in the shallows below Tembe since before the rains, and it did not look up when the cub came down the bank with his ribs showing and burrs knotted in his mane. "You are the one the salt wind took," it said. "Your mother walked north with the others. Since then you have answered to three names, and none of them were yours." The cub said nothing. He had sold the first name for a bowl of millet and the second for a night under a cart, and the third he had simply forgotten to keep.

In the market at Tembe, an old woman called Ashi sat weaving reed mats in the dust. She had watched him cross the square with his head down and his tail low, and when he reached for a fallen mango she caught his wrist without looking. "Kumbuka wewe ni nani," she said, softly, the way you would tell a child where the well was. Remember who you are. He pulled free and ran, but the words kept pace with him all the way to the edge of the flats, and by nightfall he was saying them aloud to the stones.
He walked north for nine days. On the tenth he found the dry hollow where the pride had once slept, and in the middle of it a patch of grass still lay pressed into the shape of a cub curled tight, head turned toward the river. Nobody was there. He lowered himself into the hollow and fitted his body to the shape, nose toward the far water, and he said his own name once, quietly, as if testing the ground beneath it.
In the morning the heron was standing at the edge of the hollow. It watched him stand, shake the dust from his coat and turn his face to the river. "Better," it said, and went back to its fishing.
