Lion cub outline on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small single-line tattoo of a lion cub, drawn in a simple black outline with no shading, sits on the inside of the wrist. The pose shows the cub in profile with its tail curled up. Behind the hand, a laptop screen shows an animated scene of lions against a dark blue background, and the image is a close, well-lit snapshot.

Hollis kept the flatbed at fifty on the Carrow Pass road because the needle wobbled above that and the dust came through the vents in fine orange sheets. On the dashboard sat the little wooden cub her grandfather had carved from mesquite, its tail curled up over its back like a question nobody had bothered to finish asking. She had not touched it since the funeral, and she was not sure she could explain why she was carrying it now, wrapped in a sock in the glovebox.

The hitchhiker at the lay-by near Ossory Well had a sack of tin toys and a cough that rattled like loose change. He said his name was Teodor and that he sold things nobody needed to people who needed them badly. When she asked what he had, he tipped the sack and took out a lion cub stamped flat from an old biscuit tin, the paint worn to bare metal along its belly. He turned it in the glare. "Somebody sold the other half of this," he said, "and then somebody else bought it back." She did not ask how he knew about the wooden one. The radio gave its last hiss past the cattle grid.
They reached Calder Wells as the light went copper. Teodor's stall was a plank under a tarpaulin beside the shut petrol pumps. Hollis unwrapped the sock and set the wooden cub down next to the tin one, and he pressed them together at the shoulder with a single bent nail. The tails met exactly, two curls, one raised and one leaning out into the dusk, as if the pair had been waiting on a road for somebody to finish the sentence.
She drove home with the tin cub in her lap and the window down, and the wind smelled of rain that never reached the flats.
