Simba outline on the inner wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a small outline of Simba, the lion cub from The Lion King, drawn in a single thin black line with no shading. It sits on the inner wrist of a hand raised towards the camera. Behind it, a laptop screen shows a still from the film, with the keyboard visible in the lower foreground.

Nobody in Tirion Hollow could say where the cub came from, only that it was sitting on a ledge of wet stone at the foot of the number three drift the morning after the roof came down on the lower heading. Its tail was curled round its front paws and it did not flinch when the fitters swung their lamps across its face. For nine days it would not leave the shelf. Elin Morgan, whose father was one of the six still under the fall, brought it bread wrapped in a clean handkerchief each dawn. Each dawn the bread was gone and the cub was watching the black mouth of the tunnel. On the tenth morning it stood, shook the dust from its mane, and walked slowly along a seam the surveyors had written off. The men followed on their knees with their picks, past a fall of slate, and stopped when it stopped. It sat down. Somebody knocked twice on the rock and heard two knocks come back.

They dug through by evening, and all six came out alive, grey and blinking into the lamplight. Elin's father was carried up last, and he said afterwards that the cub had gone ahead the whole way, looking back over its shoulder so he never once lost sight of it.

When they reached the surface the ledge was empty. In the coal dust by the shaft mouth someone had found a single curve, drawn with a claw, a ring with a small lion curled inside it. Evan Prys stood over it at first light and swore the sun came up through the middle of it exactly.
