The mule had been carrying salt over the Sorrow Pass since before the bridge at Carrow fell, and Ysolde knew every stone that rang hollow under its hooves. That autumn the fog came down early and thick as wool, and she walked ahead with a lantern while the boy led the animal behind her. He had not spoken since the village well went dry. He only watched the ground for the loose shale that could take a foot away.

At the highest cairn the path split in two. One branch curled down toward the lake of Merrin, where the old shepherds said a bell rang under the water. The other wound up through a fold of rock nobody had walked in years. Ysolde had never taken it. Her mother had never taken it. The boy stopped and looked at her, and for once there was something in his face that was not fear.

She lifted the lantern and found the line of pale lichen her grandmother had painted on the rock, a single loop that folded back on itself like a river doubling in a meadow. She followed it. The fog thinned around her knees, then her waist, and at the top there was a hollow with a spring so clear it showed the sky's reflection upside down. The boy knelt and drank. Ysolde filled the skin, then tied a strip of red cloth to the cairn beside her grandmother's old mark, so that whoever came next would know the way home was also the way up.
