Lotus tattoo on a big toe
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare foot with a small lotus design tattooed on the side of the big toe, drawn in black outline. The linework is bold and unshaded, with pointed petals fanning upwards from the toe edge. The blue nail polish on the toes provides the only strong colour against the dark leather surface beneath the foot.

Every August the outline came up through the duckweed, black-edged, petals stacked one above another like hymn pages left out in the rain. The children called it the inkwell. My father planted the first bulb the summer the mill shut, when the water dropped so low you could walk to the island in your Sunday shoes. He said a lotus would grow anywhere people had stopped expecting anything.
The clipboard man wanted a survey. I gave him a tin of Rich Tea and walked him out to the rail. He crouched, squinted and said it looked more drawn than grown. I told him the bulb was ordinary and the drawing was my father's, done with a Parker pen on the morning he signed the allotment lease, and that he could put that under whatever heading suited.
He wrote nothing down. When he left, the flowers were already folding for the afternoon, petals closing in on themselves like a fist opening the wrong way, and I stood there with the biscuits until the ducks gave up on me.
