Small ladybird tattoo on a toe
Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo
A small ladybird is tattooed on the side of a toe on a bare foot, with its red body, black spots and dark outline clearly visible. The linework is simple and clean, and the insect is shown in a slight three-quarter view against a plain dark background. Glitter turquoise nail polish on the toes contrasts with the red of the tattoo.

The ladybird came aboard in a sack of Maris Pipers at Grimsby, and by the time we cleared the Humber she had worked her way up the galley shelf to the tin of Bovril, where she sat as if she was paying the rent. Bosun Tate said it was bad luck to kill one and worse to let one sail off, so I left the porthole open a crack and set a smear of tinned peach on the windowsill.

Four days out the weather turned. The stockpot slopped, the bread went green at the edges, and the lads stopped coming down for their tea. I talked to her while I scraped carrots. I told her about my mother's kitchen in Whitby, the blue tiles and the way the gas ring popped when it caught. She listened the way a ladybird listens, which is to say not at all, and every so often she lifted a wing case as if to check the weather for herself.
On the fifth morning the sea went flat as a baking tray, and she was gone. I found her on the outside of the porthole, red as a pillar box, perched there polishing her legs one at a time. Tate came in for his mug, saw her, and said nothing. He just nodded and drank his tea without sugar for once.
We put in at Lerwick that night with a hold full of haddock, and nobody aboard would have sworn a ladybird had ever been on the ship. Only the lid of the Bovril tin had a small red fleck on it, and I left it there.
