LOVE and SICK finger lettering
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two clenched fists are held toward the camera, with the face cropped out of frame. Each finger carries a single black capital letter, spelling LOVE on the left hand and SICK on the right, in a thin, high-contrast serif style with solid black ink. The image is in soft natural light with a plain pale background, and the woman wears a black top and red-orange nail polish.

Mother said the crowds had come for the scandal, and they had, three hundred of them in a field built for two hundred.

Our show was dying the way old shows do, slowly and then all at once on a wet Tuesday. The elephant had gone to a sanctuary in Wales. The clowns drank in the second caravan and argued over who owned the lion's brass bell. Only Dolly still believed in the bills. Every night she climbed to the top of the rigging with her palms chalked and read the words aloud across the dark canvas, as if she were calling the sea back in.
On the last night the big top came down in the rain, and I found a bill folded in the pocket of her spangled coat. Someone had written under the printing in pencil: Still worth the ticket. I didn't ask Dolly who. I pasted it back on the fence by the level crossing myself, smoothing the corners with my thumbs until the glue held, and I stood there long after the lorries had gone.
