Our Dad always said a buck will walk right past you if you stand still enough, and the trick is knowing which stillness it trusts. Ask Mags Pilling's boy about it sometime, though he'll tell you it was luck. The two of them, Ray and Lorna Pilling, had a bet going about who'd bag the big twelve-pointer on Hollin Edge first, and neither would ever say what the loser had to pay.

Well, the stag came down through the bracken one grey November morning, and Ray had his rifle up, but Lorna put her hand on the barrel and told him to look at the twigs. Every branch on that beast was snapped clean and bent the same way, like something had been walking the hill ahead of it, breaking the path. Ray swore it was a trick of the light. Lorna swore it was the same stag her grandmother had drawn on the back of a tide table, the one that came back every winter to show the lost sheep the way down.
They didn't shoot. They sat in the wet heather till dusk, and when the light went the buck was gone, and so was the bet. Ray carved a little pink ribbon into the fence post at the bottom of the field, and Lorna laughed till she had to sit down in the mud. Some folk say the ribbon is still there. I've never been up to look, and I've never once wanted to.
