Matching infinity and beyond wrist tattoos
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are pressed together, each showing a matching script tattoo. The left wrist reads "to" followed by an infinity symbol with small dots, and the right wrist reads "and beyond" with two small birds above the text. The linework is thin and even in dark ink, set against soft blurred greenery in the background.

Dear Shona, the lift is out again, so I walked all fourteen floors with the shopping and your letter folded in my cardigan pocket, and I read it on the landing by the bins while the pigeons watched me like I owed them money. You say the new flat has a view of the harbour and a radiator that actually works. Good. I'm glad one of us is getting a view.

Here is what I did with the wrist. I went to the parlour on Mill Street, the one with the handwritten price list in the window, and asked the lad to copy your handwriting from your birthday card, which I've kept for thirty years. He said he couldn't match it exactly, so we used mine, which is worse, and I told him you'd forgive me. Mine says to, with the loop running into the infinity, and yours says and beyond with the two little birds you insisted on. Pressed together on the kitchen table, the words run into each other the way they did in our exercise books.
Write back and tell me the birds have landed somewhere decent. I'll be on the balcony at six with the kettle and a flask, listening for the lift and, if I'm lucky, you swearing on the stairs.
Love, Maggie
