Two wrists with matching fine line script tattoos in blue and red, reading 'to' with an infinity symbol and 'and beyond' with small birds.

Matching 'to infinity' and 'and beyond' wrist script

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a thin script tattoo: the left reads 'to' followed by an infinity symbol with two small dots, and the right reads 'and beyond' with two small birds above the final letters. The linework is delicate and even, with the words in blue ink and the birds and the end of the phrase in red. The plain pale background keeps the focus on the two matching designs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, you lot, and mind the stove, because this is the one about the Marigold and the two Pettigrew boys who would not stop arguing about the sea. Jack said the sea had an edge, a rail somewhere past the Scar where the water simply stopped and you fell off into the dark. Tom said that was rubbish, his mother's cousin had sailed past the Scar twice in a coal barge and come back with his hat still on.

They had a bet, the way boys do. Whoever could work out how far the line went, past the last buoy, would have the other's share of the pilchards for a year. So one October they went out on the Marigold before the light, with a tin of ink and a bodkin, and they pricked words into each other's wrists so neither could cheat and say it had only been a dream. Jack did the blue, and Tom did the red for the birds, because Tom said the gulls always knew where the fish were.

Past the Scar the water did not stop. It just kept going, grey and then silver, and the gulls kept lifting off ahead of them as if someone were pointing the way with a finger. Tom laughed until he cried, and Jack said nothing at all, which was how you knew he was frightened and happy at once.

They never did settle the bet. The Marigold came home with her nets full and two boys who could not stop holding their wrists up to the lamp, and that is all I know, and more than enough for a Tuesday.
