Matching 'to infinity and beyond' wrist tattoos
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a fine line script tattoo that together form the phrase 'to' with an infinity symbol, then 'and beyond'. The linework is thin and delicate, with the ink mostly dark navy blue and red accents on the right wrist. The soft, warm-toned background and close framing keep the focus on the two matching designs.

The lock keeper at Hanwell had painted the gates a green that nobody liked, and Maud Ferrier hated the sight of them every time the barge Tern nosed into the chamber. Her brother Lenny stood on the coping with the windlass, whistling through his teeth, pretending the water level was no bother to him. Fourteen years of towing coal and cabbages up the Thames had taught them both that patience was a thing you did with your hands, not your face.

The chamber filled slowly. A pair of swans drifted past the bow, unbothered, and Maud noticed the ink on Lenny's wrist as he turned the handle. Their mother had insisted on the matching script the summer they bought the Tern, a daft little promise scratched on the inside of their skin: to, then the loop of the infinity sign, then and beyond. Lenny's had faded to a grey-blue. Hers still held its navy, though the red on the end of hers had gone the colour of old brick.
When the gates groaned open, Lenny jumped back onto the deck and held out a hand. "Where to, then?" he asked, the way he always did, grinning like a fool.
Maud took the tiller, pointed the bow at the long grey reach beyond the weir, and said, "Wherever the coal is paying." He laughed, and she laughed too, and the Tern slid out of the lock with its green gates shrinking behind them.
