Two wrists are shown side by side, one reading 'to' followed by an infinity symbol and the other reading 'and beyond', together forming the phrase 'to infinity and beyond'. The lettering is a thin, flowing script in dark blue ink, with a small red mark above the final letters of 'beyond'. The soft, blurred background and warm light give the photo a muted, pastel tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry horn had sounded twice by the time Nell pushed through the crowd on the quay, her wrist still stinging under its square of gauze. Ruth came after her, stamping her boots on the planks as if the cold had done it personally. 'You'll have it rubbed off by Margate,' she said. 'Let it,' said Nell. 'Mr Aske says salt water does nothing to good ink.'

They had flown the red kite off Gull Point every August since they were eleven, and every August Ruth wound the string tighter on its wooden spool and swore it would never run out. 'To infinity,' she'd said once, pointing at the loop of cord, and Nell had laughed and said, 'And beyond,' because it sounded like the end of something good. Last summer neither of them had mentioned the ferry. Then the letter from the hospital in Liverpool had come, and the joke stopped being a joke.

The night before, they had sat in the back room above the bakery while Mr Aske worked, one needle and one stencil each. Ruth had chosen the swooping blue letters for her wrist, the word 'to' and the figure eight lying on its side after it. Nell had taken the rest, 'and beyond', with a tiny red kite pinned above the final letters because Ruth had insisted a kite belonged in every sentence.

On the rail, Nell lifted her arm and pressed her wrist flat against Ruth's. The blue lettering met across the gap in the wind, the loop running straight into the phrase. Below them the water churned white behind the propellers, and high over the harbour wall a real red kite tugged at its string, not quite ready to come down.
