Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a matching fine line script tattoo. The left wrist reads 'to' followed by an infinity symbol, and the right reads 'and beyond', with small red birds above the final letters. The blue linework is crisp and even on pale skin, with a soft, blurred pink and green background.

The night train to Carlisle was late, so Ada sat on the bench under the iron canopy and counted the swallows roosting in its girders. Their mother worked the signal box at Thornby Junction and had a saying: you speak the first half, the other one finishes it, and that is how you know the line is still clear. When they were small they had written the words on each other's wrists with a steel nib and a bottle of blue ink nicked from the stationmaster's desk. 'To,' Ada said, and held out her arm. Ivy looked at the little loop she had drawn there, smudged at the edges, and did not finish.

The signal dropped with a clatter. Down the platform the lamps came on one by one, and the swallows lifted off the girders all at once, a dark cloud that turned red where the low sun caught their throats. Ivy stood. 'And beyond,' she said, quickly, as if it might be taken back, and then she was through the carriage door and the window was full of her hand.

Ada stayed on the bench until the last bird had gone over the roof of the goods shed. Then she rolled down her sleeve, walked home by the cutting path, and chalked the second half on the kitchen slate so her mother would find it when the shift ended: the line was clear.
