Matching infinity symbol tattoos on two wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two inner forearm tattoos sit side by side in a black and white photograph. The left shows an infinity symbol with flourishing scrolled lines and a script name, while the right shows a thin, single-line infinity symbol with a small looping script detail across its centre. The linework is crisp and even with soft grey shading on the skin, and the close framing with a soft, bright background gives the image a gentle, intimate feel.

Past the last cottage at Hollin Wood lived a rope-maker called Ada Penhallow, who twisted her cord from flax and never let a length run out until it met its own beginning. Her two daughters, Wenna and Tam, quarrelled over everything. The village said the quarrel was in the cord itself, that it had been spun too tight.

One autumn the wood took Tam's red ribbon, which she had tied to a hazel to mark the path, and Wenna went in after it. She came back at dusk with the ribbon in her teeth and a loop of thread in her hand, pulled out of the bracken, with no end to it that anyone could find. Ada took the thread, turned it over a long while, and told them to hold their wrists together.
She bound each girl with a single turn of the cord, a figure that lay on its side like a sleeping eight, and drew it snug. Where the two lines crossed she knotted in a scrap of the red ribbon and sang a line about the river going round the mill and coming back to the wheel.
The girls grew up quarrelling and never once got lost in the wood. When Ada went in under the hazels in her ninetieth winter, they found the spindle still turning and the cord still running from it, and neither could say where it began or stopped, so they agreed to share it.
