Jam and peanut butter toast characters on a limb
Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo
Two cartoon slices of bread sit side by side, the left covered in lumpy purple jam and the right in brown peanut butter, each with a simple smiling face. Pink radiating lines sit above them and dark shadow ovals sit beneath, all outlined in bold black linework. Soft shading and vivid purple, brown and pink ink give the piece a playful, cartoon look on smooth skin.

The hamper lid came up on the third try, and Bramble was the first thing the morning sun found: lumpy, purple and already complaining. "We have been left on a stump," she said. "Next to a copse. Where is the butter?"

"Under you, probably," said Nutley, who was square, brown and unbothered, and who had sat in the dew since dawn without a word of protest. "Keep your voice down. The wasps are awake."
Bramble huffed, and a shower of crumbs tumbled from her crust onto the bark. Last summer they had been pressed together on the same loaf, and she had never quite forgiven the knife that did it. Sticky, she called Nutley. Close, he called her. They were not friends, strictly speaking. But being the only two slices left at the bottom of a picnic bag made them the nearest thing to company either had.
Then a fox came out of the bracken, nose twitching at the smell of their spreads, and the stump wobbled under the weight of its own excitement. Nutley said nothing. He simply leaned, and Bramble leaned back, and between them they rolled off the edge in a tumble of crusts. They landed in the long grass, face to face, sunlight flaring over them like a cheer from the treetops. When the fox lost interest and trotted off, they lay there a while, looking up at the stump where their two dark shadows pooled on the moss.
"Same time tomorrow?" Nutley asked.
"Only if you stop bringing the crumbs," said Bramble, and bounced once, twice, until they were hopping side by side toward the village lane, their shadows bobbing beneath them all the way.
