You will not believe what Dad did to the cabin side while you were gone. He spent a whole wet Saturday with a pot of enamel and the fine brush he keeps for varnishing the tiller, and he painted two hands on the hull, one by the tiller and one by the coal hatch, both in white gloves with their fingers folded into a heart. Over the left one he put a blue pointed hat with a crescent moon and three little stars, the sort of hat a conjurer wears in a children's book. Over the right one he put a red bow with white spots, which he swears is your fault, because you wore one to every fair from the age of six.

Mum says it looks like a pair of lovers who have never met a lock keeper. The boatmen on the Trent have been stopping to take photographs, and young Sam from the boatyard asked if he could copy them onto his arm. I told him Dad would charge him a shilling a finger.

The strange thing is that the hands did not wash off in the rain. Two nights ago the water came up over the towpath and lapped right to the cabin step, and I sat there with the lamp, watching the blue hat and the red bow shine wet in the light, and I thought of you on that train with your ticket folded inside your glove. I wanted to tell you the hands still meet every morning when the sun comes round the bend, even when nobody is steering.

Come home at Easter. Bring the bow. Dad says the hat has no one to wear it yet.
