Mickey Mouse silhouettes down the back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows several Mickey Mouse head shapes in different sizes, arranged in a loose vertical column across the skin of the upper back. Larger heads are drawn as clean outlines, while smaller ones are filled solid black, with a small solid star placed beside the lower outlined head. The image uses only black ink, with no shading or colour, and the skin shows freckles and a slightly warm tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Grandad never called them mice. He called them the little round-eared folk, and he said you drew them on the trunks of the beeches above Sallow Cross so the wood would know you were coming back. I thought it was nonsense until the autumn I was sent up after the goats and the mist came down thick as wool.

I'd brought a lump of charcoal from the clamp, and I did what he had taught me. The big ones I drew in outline with a stick scraped white: a round head with two round ears joined to it like a bun on a bun. The small ones I filled solid with my thumb, black as a missed step. Every few trees there was a star scratched beside the lowest head, which meant the path turned towards the stream. My hands shook and the marks came out lopsided, but they came out.

The goats were never found. I followed the trail down by those pale and dark heads on the bark, and when I reached the edge of the village the last two were drawn so close together they nearly touched, one solid and one outlined, as if someone had been coming up the other way to meet me.

Grandad was waiting at the gate with the lantern. He looked at the black on my fingers, then past me at the dark line of the wood, and he took the rope from my hand without a word. At first light we would go up with a fresh stick of charcoal, because there was always one more tree that needed its mark.
