Mickey and Minnie with script quote on lower back
Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo
Mickey and Minnie Mouse sit side by side beneath a looping script quote that reads Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age and dreams last forever. The characters are drawn with bold outlines and soft grey shading, with small star shapes and a grey smoky background behind them. Minnie's polka dot bow and a small red accent on the design are the only red ink, with the rest in black and grey.

In the hard winter the fen mice got into the scriptorium at Saint Oswin's, and Brother Tobias, who had the lightest hand in the house, let them stay. The abbot did not hold with laughter at the desks, but Tobias laughed often into his sleeve when the two mice came down the leg of the lectern and fought over a crust. The smaller one wore a scrap of red silk pulled from a novice's sewing basket, knotted at one ear. Tobias dabbed white spots on it with a goose quill, so the ribbon would look like it belonged to the mouse.

Father Gerard came in at Lauds with a lantern and found the margins of the Psalter crowded with mice. There was a big one with round ears, a small one with a bow, and a scatter of stars above the initials. He turned the vellum to the light and his mouth went thin. 'This is vanity,' he said. 'Burn it.' Tobias asked for one night. The abbot granted it, and Tobias sat up with his cold ink and wrote beneath the drawing, in his finest hand, the words the old copyists kept for the verses of praise.
In the morning the abbot read it twice. He did not burn the page. He carried it to the library himself and set it on the shelf between the lives of the saints, and no one ever asked him why.
The mice still come out in the thaw, the brothers say, and the bow on the small one is still red, because Tobias mixed that ink from cherry stain and it never faded.
