Mickey-style hands heart tattoo on a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised against a pale sky and a blurred castle with pointed turrets. The small black tattoo on the hand shows two cartoon gloved hands meeting to form a heart outline. The linework is thin and uniform with no shading, and the image is otherwise in soft, muted colours with pink nail polish and a silver ring.

The fog had sat on the bay since Tuesday, and Maud Tolley had given up expecting the Pearce sisters down for breakfast before eleven. She carried the kettle along the back passage of Sandpiper House, past the cupboard where the old pier-show boxes were stacked, and found the youngest lodger already at the front parlour window, a cup going cold in her hands.

"They're still there," Rhoda said, not turning round. Across the road the wet sea wall ran out toward the pier, and at the end of it the pier theatre showed through its broken lower panes: a painted backdrop of a castle with pointed blue roofs, faded to the colour of old teeth. Dennis from the ticket office had sworn he would touch up the turrets before the August visitors came, but the brushes were still soaking in Maud's own sink, so she doubted it.

Rhoda had a pair of white cotton gloves from the show, the stiff kind the puppeteers wore. She had cut the fingers off one and used it to rub paint off the backdrop's edge, and the other lay folded on the sill. She pressed her two gloved hands together, thumbs up, fingers curling, until they made a heart against the glass, then breathed on it so the shape blurred and came back.

"Mr Dennis said those gloves were for the puppets," Maud said. "Nobody's using the puppets." Maud set the kettle down. Outside, the fog thinned just enough for the castle to stand clear, its turrets sharp as pins, and the heart on the glass sat in the same grey light as the painted towers, as if someone had finally decided to finish them.
