Mountain peak above DRD4-7R lettering

Black and grey · Flash

A monoline drawing of a triangular mountain peak with two zigzag lines across its upper half, sitting above the lettering DRD4-7R in tall, upright capitals. The strokes are even black ink on a pale grey background, with no shading or fill. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with the lettering spanning the full width beneath the peak.

Sit nearer the stove, the lot of you, and mind the draught from the door, it has been trying to get in since Martinmas. You'll want to hear about the stone above the Cold Gate, the one with the peak scratched into it. Old Henrik Vell cut that mark the winter his dog went over the cornice. He was a surveyor for the mining company and had a habit of naming things after their numbers, so the dog became DRD4-7R, the seventh road of the fourth row, or so he claimed. Nobody else called her that. We called her Rook.

Rook was a grey lurcher with a white blaze, and she would not keep to a path if one had been made for her. Every morning she ran out ahead of him and every morning she came back with snow on her whiskers, looking pleased with herself. In the third week of January she did not come back at all. Henrik went up the zigzag path with a lantern and a coil of rope, and he did not come back down for two days.

When he finally walked into this room he had no lantern, and his hands were white to the wrist. He said nothing about the dog. He sat where you are sitting, ordered broth, and then took a knife from his coat and went out into the blizzard. In the morning we found him at the lintel stone, cutting the peak into it: the triangle, and the two zigzags for the ridges he had crossed. Beneath it he carved the name, letter by letter, so it would last longer than he would.

When the snow went off the Gate in spring, a shepherd found Rook asleep in a hollow below the ridge, curled around a lamb she had carried down out of the drift. Henrik never went up that way again. He said the mountain had given him back the one thing it owed him, and he saw no reason to go collecting the rest.
