Olaf from Frozen holding a carrot on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon snowman Olaf from Frozen, grinning with an open mouth and pink tongue, and holding an orange carrot. He sits in front of a blue diamond shape with white sparkles, and small snowflake marks appear around him. Bold black outlines define the figure, and the colours are flat and bright on a healed-looking patch of pale skin on the lower leg.

You are the only one aboard the hauler Thimble who still believes in summer, and nobody has told the ship's welfare system to stop indulging you. Every cycle you stand in the hydroponics bay with a stubby orange carrot you grew in a tray behind the kelp vats, and you tell the crew it is the warmest object in the known galaxy. Marta from the ice crew rolls her eyes. Kwame laughs so hard he has to sit down on a cargo crate.

Then the reactor coolant fails past the Kessler belt, and the Thimble starts losing heat the way a rumour loses detail. Frost feathers the viewport. Marta says the cold will reach the bay by morning cycle. You carry your carrot to the airlock manifold, where the pressure valves still hum warm from the last burn, and you wedge it into the vent grate like a flag on a summit.

Kwame finds you there with two spanners and a face like a funeral. "That's a vegetable, not a heat sink."

"It's a sunbeam with a root," you say, and he, against all reason, holds the hatch open while you coax the valve back to life. The carrot sizzles to black. Blue sparks spit off the manifold, and for one absurd moment the whole corridor smells of toasted sugar and ozone.

The coolant holds. Ten hours later the bay is still freezing and the crew are wrapped in foil blankets, but the vent above the scorched carrot glows a stubborn orange. In the morning there is a second carrot beside your tray, with a note in Marta's hand: "For the snowman. Don't get ideas." You don't get ideas. You get a fresh tray of seedlings and a very long winter to plan for.
