Dear Obituaries Desk, I am writing about the notice you printed for Hector, which is not quite right. You gave his age as eleven and his occupation as "retired". He was never retired. He was fourteen, and he had a Saturday job at the Crown in Todmorden, sitting on the bar stool nearest the fire and ordering a dry martini with one olive, shaken, which Dennis the barman made under protest for six years.

On the Thursday he died, nobody could agree on what to put on the banner. Dennis wanted something sombre. My sister wanted a joke. We settled on RIP in blue capitals on a strip of old mural paper, and I pinned it to the lounge wall above the dartboard. We raised a glass to him with an olive in it, which Dennis fished out of the jar with a cocktail stick and set on the tray like a small green coin.

The wake was quiet until ten past nine, when the back door swung open and Hector trotted in, collar on, looking unbothered. He hopped onto his stool, nudged the banner aside with one paw, and drank the martini in a single go. Dennis sat down on the floor. I have been asked to write to you about the error. I have decided the error is in the notice, not the dog. Please print a correction with his proper age, which is unknown, and a note that the olive was stolen. Yours faithfully, Gordon Ainley.
