Oscar the Grouch in a trash can on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Oscar the Grouch, the green Sesame Street character in a grey hat, peering over the rim of a silver metal bin. A tag on the bin reads SCRAM, and small details are added at the base of the bin. The outlines are bold, with soft shading on the metal and textured fur, and the design is set centrally on a forearm.

The bin had been sitting in the Greenwich shallows since the sea took the Old Naval Quarter, and nobody in my crew would touch it. Salvagers respect a grudge. The thing inside, a green-furred creature in a battered grey hat, glared at us from behind the tin rim as if we owed it rent. Its sign said SCRAM, which Dilys took as an instruction and I took as a challenge.

I went back alone at low tide with a crowbar and a bad feeling. The lid was rusted shut, the hinges sealed with something like barnacle glue. When I finally pried it open, the thing did not leap out. It just kept its eyes on me and muttered, which I decided to count as a yes. Under its feet lay a scatter of brass screws, a cracked radio and a tin of peppermints from before the flood.

Dilys said the grouch was bad luck and that you never salvage what refuses to be salvaged. I told her it had survived three centuries of water and rust without once looking pleased about it, and that made it the most honest thing on the shoreline. We carried the bin up the steps between us, arguing the whole way about where it should go.

We put it on the hab roof facing the river, where the sun hits first. Each morning since, the creature has grumbled at the tide, and each morning the gulls have circled lower, daring it. I have never seen it smile. But on the third day I noticed the sign had been turned, so SCRAM faced the water, and it was the gulls who were leaving.
