Outline cloud on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small cloud is drawn as a single thin black outline on the inner wrist. The linework is even and unshaded, with no fill or inner detail. The skin is the main colour in the frame, with a laptop keyboard and screen blurred in the background.

The rain had come sideways off the estuary since before dawn, and by eight the awnings on Harbour Market were sagging like wet sails. You stood under the corner of Pask's fish stall, pinning a price card to a crate of mackerel nobody had asked for yet, and listened to the gutters choke, clear, and choke again. Mrs Pask kept the ledger under the till, a green cloth-bound thing with a broken spine, and in it she recorded every morning the market opened dry.

Her rule had been plain from your first week. No drizzle, no drip, nothing you could honestly call weather. Only a day when the sky held its breath and the stalls sold out before the bell. On those days you drew a cloud in the margin, one flat line with a bump or two along its top, and wrote the date beside it. Most pages were still blank. The clouds were the only drawings in the book, and she said that was the point of them, that they were small enough to be kept.
Thursday she didn't come in. The van from the quay was late, the till drawer jammed on the cashbox, and somewhere past eleven the rain thinned to nothing and a thin white light lay across the cobbles. People stopped and looked up as if someone had forgotten to lock a door. You opened the ledger on the fish counter with wet fingers, found the pen, and drew the cloud slowly, bump by bump, then wrote the date in her careful hand that you had copied for six months.
When you closed the book the first drops were already tapping the canvas again, patient, like someone who knew exactly where you were standing.
