Patterned elephant on the side ribs
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large elephant facing left is filled with dense ornamental linework, including floral and paisley-like motifs, in black ink. The elephant sits on the side of the torso below a lifted white top, with the skin lit evenly against a blurred background of green leaves and a tree trunk.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Every morning the elephant came down the sand road with the nets folded across her back, and every morning the boatmen argued over who would load her first. Her name was Kanni, which meant nothing in particular, and she had been carrying the fleet's gear since the harbour wall was no more than a heap of stones. Her hide was worked all over with curling leaves and little teardrop shapes, black as lamp soot, and the old women said each curl was a knot that had held a boat together through a bad season.

The year the wind turned early, nineteen boats went out past the reef at dawn, and by noon the sky had gone the colour of slate. Women stood on the breakwater with their shawls pulled tight. Kanni did not wait to be asked. She walked into the surf up to her shoulders, the water lifting the fringe of nets from her back, and she stood at the mouth of the channel with her trunk raised like a lamp. The boats came in one by one, steering on the dark shape of her, until the last of them had nosed past into the calm.
When the storm passed, the fishermen went looking for her with lanterns and coils of rope. They found her standing in the shallows, rocking gently, her flank wet and shining. Nobody could say how many of the knots on her hide were new, only that every boat in the fleet swore it could pick out its own pattern somewhere along her side. After that, they stopped arguing about the loading.
