Paw print and red heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small black paw print with four toe pads and a main pad sits beside a red outlined heart on the inside of a wrist. The paw is solid black ink with soft edges, while the heart is a delicate single red line. The plain background shows a purple tattoo machine with a wrapped paper towel grip, a pair of plastic eyes and a floral towel.

The prints began at the gate and went on up the lower field, four toes and a pad, each one sharp in the crust of frost. Ada had been out since first light with the lantern and a bucket of pellets she didn't need, because the dog had not come back for breakfast, and Bramble had never once missed breakfast in nine years.

The trail wandered. It cut past the water trough, doubled back under the hawthorn, then stopped dead where the wall met the lambing shed. Ada crouched and wiped her glove across the stone. Someone had scratched a small red heart into the lime wash, faded to the colour of rust by weather, the same heart her brother had carved there the winter before he left for the city and never wrote from again. She had thought nobody else remembered it.

Inside, the shed was warm with straw and breath. Bramble lay curled against the hurdle with a single lamb tucked under her chin, its legs folded like pegs. The dog thumped her tail once, slowly, and did not get up. Ada knelt in the straw, her knees going numb through the denim, and laughed at herself for the fright she had carried all the way up the hill.

When they walked back down together, the lamb bleating in the crook of Ada's arm, she looked over her shoulder at the two lines of prints running side by side toward the house. The heart on the wall had been drawn by someone who meant to come back. By the time they reached the kitchen door the snow had filled the gaps between the prints, and the path was only a path again.
