Infinity paw print and heart on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an infinity loop with a solid black paw print on the left and an outlined heart on the right, with a word in cursive script written along the loop. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. It is photographed straight on against a plain skin background, with the wrist filling most of the frame.

Mags had the kennel door open before the lorry's brakes stopped hissing, because Ruddle always waited at the same spot by the gate. Forty years on the Harwich run had taught her that much about dogs and drivers: both come back to the place where they were last sure of you.

At the Dover crossing that Thursday, the officer in lane seven read the pet passport twice. Ruddle had been to Rotterdam and back a dozen times, and each crossing the same paperwork came out of the same plastic wallet, soft at the corners. 'Same dog, same paw,' he said, and Mags laughed, because he had been about to say something official and had said that instead. He stamped the page, then ran his thumb down the vaccination record, past the blue ink from the vet in Hook, and handed it back with a tip of his cap.
On the far side of the barrier she pulled into the lay-by above the harbour and cut the engine. The sea was the colour of wet slate. Ruddle rested her chin on Mags's knee and gave the long, put-upon sigh of a dog who had seen it all before. Her father had once told her that a loop never has a start or an end, only the same walk round again, and she had thought him daft at the time.
Mags folded the wallet back into the glovebox, pressed the stamped page flat with her palm, and whistled once. Ruddle was already at the door, waiting in the same place she always waited, as if the whole crossing had been a circle and they had simply come round to the gate again.
