Infinity, paw print and heart wrist tattoo

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the inside of a wrist, with a fingered hand raised above it. The design is an infinity loop with a paw print above the left loop, a small outlined heart on the right and a curved stethoscope-like shape on the left. The lines are solid and even with no shading, set against pale skin on a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You run Gull Rest on the front at Saltcombe, and by the second week of October you have stopped asking the collie's name. She arrives on the Tuesday train with a wet lead trailing from her collar and a man's glove in her mouth, and she sleeps under the hall table with her nose against the radiator as though the house owes her rent. The guests call her Mab because someone once read it off a luggage tag, and nobody has thought to check.

Each morning she walks the same loop: past the chip shop, down the slipway, along the groyne to the lifeboat house, then back up the steep lane to your door. One morning you follow her in your slippers to see where it goes. At the lifeboat house a retired vet called Dr Ferris sits on an upturned crate with a flask, and he listens to her ribs with an old brass stethoscope while the tide turns over the stones. He says nothing about the glove. He just nods at you as if you were expected.

On the last Thursday the wind swings north and the loop is harder. Mab stops halfway along the groyne and will not move. You kneel on the wet boards and press your palm to her side, and feel a heartbeat slow and even, like a clock nobody has wound for years. Ferris comes up the slipway, sets the cold bell of the stethoscope against your own chest, and says, "Keep walking her. She only needs to know the way back."

You do. The next morning the crate is empty, the flask is still warm, and the glove is folded on the stones with a tiny heart scratched into its cuff.
