Paw print and heart outline on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black paw print sits inside a single continuous black outline that loops around it to form a heart shape, with a small tail-like point on the right. The paw pads and main pad are filled in solid black, while the heart outline is a consistent, even line of medium weight. The tattoo is shown in black ink only on pale skin, centred in the frame against a dark grey fabric background.

The hooter sounds at ten to six, and the dog is already at the gate before the first cap comes over the rise. You know her by the white ruff and the way she lifts one forepaw off the cobbles when she hears boots, as if someone once taught her manners. Her name is Meg. She belongs to nobody on Hollin Row, which is how the row likes it.

Your father went down the Bellwood shaft in the winter of 1962 and came up on a stretcher with his lamp still burning. Meg walked beside the cart the whole way to the baths, and nobody had taught her to do that either. After that she waited at the pit gate every shift. The men began leaving crusts from their bait tins on the wall for her, then a tin of water, then a folded blanket for her bed in the lamp room, where the warmth from the wicks kept the damp off.
The night the cage stuck, fifteen men were under the headgear and the winding wheel stood silent. The crowd pressed at the railings, women with coats over their nightdresses, boys who should have been in bed. Meg did not go to the wheel. She trotted to the lamp room, turned three times on the blanket, and lay down with her nose pointed at the ventilation grate, tail curled round her front paws. Someone shouted that the air was moving. Then the wheel began to turn.
Years later you draw her on the back of a wage slip, the way she lay that night, paws tucked and tail folded round them so the whole outline closes into a heart. You keep the slip in the drawer with the lamp check cards, and you still hear the hooter at ten to six.
