Dear Nan, the flour tracks began at the back door again this morning, which means Tuppence has been out over the bin shed and come home the long way round. I found them at ten to four, before the ovens were lit, the little pads pressed white across the slate where the dough rests. They went up the bench in a loose zigzag, dipped past the scales, and climbed the shelf of tins as if the cat had meant to reach the high window and sat down halfway to think about it.

I should have been cross. Instead I stood with the lamp in my hand and counted. Eleven prints on the bench, two on the sill, and then a pair beside the sack of rye that look for all the world like a heart someone started and got bored of. Dad used to say a bakery is only ever a long argument with flour, and the cat has won every round since spring.

Eli is asleep in the flat above with the radio still murmuring, and the market loaves won't wait for me to be sensible about it. So I brushed most of the trail toward the door with the soft broom and left his note propped against the tin where it was meant to be seen. Mischief managed, in his tidy capitals, which is his way of saying he gave up on the sweeping.

I left the last three prints by the window. When the sun clears the chimneys they'll catch the light, and Tuppence can sit in them like she owns the place, which, as far as this bakery is concerned, she does.
