Infinity loop with paw print on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a looped infinity symbol with the word love written in cursive script inside the lower loop, and a solid black paw print sitting in the upper loop. The linework is thin and even, with the paw filled in solid black. The ink is black on skin, and the photograph is a close crop of the wrist against a dark background.

Fen Hallam had counted the paw prints in the frost three mornings running, and each morning there were the same two lines of them, out past the gate and back again, never quite the same length. Moss had come to the farm as a pup the spring his father died, and now the old dog could slip out in the dark without anyone in the valley noticing except Fen.

On the fourth morning the prints went further, past the beck and up the stile, and Fen followed them with a torch that was nearly flat. The snow had stopped and the light was thin and blue. At the top of the field the tracks looped round a hawthorn, circled it twice, and came back down the same way, as if whoever made them had been walking a path they could not leave.
He found the dog under the lee of the old lambing shed, curled over a tin box his father used to keep baler twine in. The lid had frozen shut, so Fen worked it free with his thumbs. Inside lay a letter in a hand he knew, folded twice and addressed to nobody: Keep the gate shut, Fen. Keep the dog warm. Come home for the lambing. Love, Dad. The date was the November his father had gone into the hospital in Carlisle and never come out.
Fen read it twice, then a third time by the failing torch. Moss stood, shook the snow from her coat and set off down the field, not back toward the house but along the loop of tracks, pausing at each bend to look round. When Fen finally caught up, the dog was sitting in the middle of the hawthorn ring, waiting for him to finish reading.
