Stitch and Lilo on two calves
Calf · Colour · Photo
Two cartoon characters are tattooed side by side on a pair of calves. On the left leg, a blue creature with large dark eyes, pink-lined ears and a toothy grin stands facing left. On the right leg, a girl with long black hair and a red patterned dress turns away with her eyes closed, and both figures have soft shading and a dark cast shadow beneath them. The inks are bright and mainly blue, red, black and pink, set against plain skin and a tiled floor in the background.

The guava jam had been on the top shelf since Tuesday, and by Thursday the whole of Lehua Bay knew who had got it down. Stitch sat on the bonnet of Mr Akana's truck with the empty jar on his head, wearing the grin of a creature who had never once been sorry, while Lilo stood in the road with her arms folded and her eyes screwed shut, as though shutting them might make the evidence disappear.

"You promised you'd be good," she said, without opening them. "You promised on the boat." Stitch wiggled his ears, which he knew she could hear, and made a noise like a kettle that had spotted something it liked. Behind them the tide rolled in over the grey sand, and a gull landed on the fence post and regarded the situation with some sympathy.
Mrs Akana came out with a broom and a face like a summer storm, and Lilo opened one eye to watch. Stitch slid off the bonnet, pressed a sticky hand to the old woman's apron and held out the jar. It was clean. It was, somehow, full again, with a single spoonful of jam smeared on the side and a small pink hibiscus tucked under the lid. Nobody ever learned where he had found the flower.
Lilo opened her other eye. "That's not sorry," she said. "That's a bribe."
"Yes," said Stitch, plainly delighted with himself. Mrs Akana laughed so hard she had to sit down on the step, and that was how the whole business was forgiven, though Lilo kept scowling all the way home and made Stitch carry the broom.
