Charmander tattoo on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A cartoon Charmander, the orange lizard Pokemon, is shown mid-pose with its arms outstretched and its tail flame raised. Black outlines, soft orange and yellow shading and a pale belly give it a smooth, rounded look, and separate flames trail behind it. The tattoo sits on a lower leg against a plain background, with the composition centred on the figure.

The reunion was at the Co-op car park in Leeds because nobody could agree on a pub, and Dev Patel arrived forty minutes late carrying a cardboard box with air holes punched in the lid. Inside, a lizard the colour of a traffic cone was sulking on a folded tea towel. Tony Quinn took one look and said, 'You brought a dragon to the Year Eleven reunion?' Dev said it was a Charmander, a baby one, and that it had been living in his airing cupboard since 2003, when a boy at the fair had swapped it for a Game Boy cartridge and a half-eaten Twix. The lizard hissed. A single flame, small as a birthday candle, curled off the tip of its tail and went out in the wind.

They walked to the old playing field because it was the only place with picnic benches. Sharon Dunn had brought sandwiches in tinfoil and a bottle of Lambrini that nobody admitted to wanting. Charmander climbed onto the table, found the crisps, and ate the whole bag of salt and vinegar with the grim concentration of a man doing his taxes. Tony laughed until he had to wipe his eyes. Dev did not laugh. He was watching the tail, which had begun to burn a little brighter every time the lizard ate something salty.
By the time the sun dropped behind the bins, the flame was the height of a torch and the lizard had grown, quite visibly, to the size of a corgi. Sharon said that was probably the point of Pokemon, and Tony said it was definitely the point of Dev, and the lizard looked from one to the other as if it had heard this before. Dev picked it up. It was warm, and it pressed its nose into his jumper the way it had when he was twelve and had no one else to tell. He walked it back to the car park, past the Co-op, past the bus shelter, and the tail lit the whole road gold.
