Cartoon cat with pink bows on a calf

Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a cartoon cat seen from behind, drawn with a bold black outline and left mostly unfilled so the skin shows through. A large pink bow sits on its back and a smaller pink bow sits on its head, both shaded with a speckled pink fill. The design is centred on the back of the lower leg and the photograph is taken straight on against a wooden floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lorry from Calais had forty pallets of frozen prawns and one passenger nobody had declared. I found her at half past four on a wet Tuesday, sitting on the tailgate with her back to the queue, a white cat with a bow the size of a dinner plate knotted at her middle and a smaller one perched on her head like a hat she'd been told not to lose.

Dennis, the driver, swore blind he had never seen her before. He had a flask, a ham sandwich and the face of a man who had been awake since three. 'She was in the cab when I left Calais,' he said. 'Sat on the dashboard, watching the gulls.' I asked for the manifest. He handed me a damp receipt for prawns, and on the back someone had drawn a small cat with a bow on its back, which was the only thing on the page that looked written with any care.

She would not walk. I tried a lead from my bag, then a tin of tuna, then a plain and dignified request. She turned her back on me again, tail curled round her paws, and waited the way people wait at bus stops in the rain. Ten minutes went by. The queue behind the lorry started to honk. Eventually I sat down on the wet concrete beside her and told her about my week, which had been mostly forms.

At twenty to five she stood, stretched, and trotted to the staff canteen, where the kitchen door had been propped open against the steam. Two cooks were arguing over a fryer. She hopped onto the bench as if she'd been booked in. I filled in the form in the box marked Other: no fixed abode, one white cat, two bows. Under nationality I wrote Pink, which Dennis said was fair.
