Pizza slice with Drink Pizza and Eat Beer banners
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A pizza slice with pepperoni and cheese dripping from its tip is wrapped in two red-edged banners, the upper reading DRINK PIZZA and the lower reading EAT BEER. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated fills in red, orange, yellow and teal give it a classic American traditional look, with small teal and black radiating lines behind the slice. The design sits centrally on a pale forearm against a plain grey backdrop.

Cassius came through the door shouting before he had even shaken the rain off his cloak. He stood under the two lines I had painted above the counter that morning, red ochre on lime plaster, and read them aloud like a magistrate reading a sentence. DRINK PIZZA. EAT BEER. Then he wanted to know which of the gods had put such nonsense into my head.

It was a wager, I told him. Nobody in Pompeii had yet agreed what to call the flatbread with melted cheese and sliced sausage, so I had settled the matter myself, and I was prepared to defend the order of the words with a jar of Falernian. The oven was still warm behind me. The cheese bubbled at the edges, and where it ran over the rim of the crust it hung in long amber drops that fell and set on the clay floor like honey on a cold morning.
Cassius wiped his chin, took a slice, and burnt the roof of his mouth, which he blamed on me in two languages. Then he chewed in silence, the way men do when they are deciding whether to be offended. By the third bite he had stopped looking at the walls. He asked for beer. I poured him one from the cask by the door, and because a bet is a bet, I pulled the cork from the jar of Falernian and set it between us.
Outside, the mountain had been quiet all week, and nobody thought to ask what that meant. Before he left, Cassius scratched a third line beneath mine in charcoal, too small for anyone in the street to read: AND CHEESE FOR THE GODS.
