Pooh and Tigger with honey pot on forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Winnie the Pooh and Tigger sitting side by side, with Tigger's arm around Pooh, beside a honey pot labelled HUNNY and a small bee above. The linework is a bold black outline with soft, flat fills in pale yellow, orange, pink and red for the characters' shirt and features. The design is centred on the skin with plenty of space around it, photographed straight on under even indoor light.

Every spring the thaw came down the Hollin Pass in a rush of brown water, and every spring old Brannoc the bear climbed up behind it to see what the cold had left him. That year it left him a stone jar wedged under a rowan, its lid sealed with wax, and a bee sitting on the wax as if it owned the place.

The bee was the first to speak. "That jar is mine," it said, "and so is the honey, and you may have a spoonful for the price of a riddle." Brannoc had never been good at riddles. He sat down heavily in the heather and asked what the riddle was. The bee said nothing for a while, then rose and circled his ear, buzzing a tune he did not know.

Down the path came Spring, a striped creature all bounce and noise, who had lost her way looking for the far side of the mountain. She saw the bear hunched over the jar, saw the bee, and laughed so hard she tumbled into a drift. "Brannoc, you great soft lump," she said, hauling herself up and throwing one arm round his shoulders, "you cannot ask a bee a riddle. Bees only ever answer in honey."

They shared the jar that afternoon, the three of them, on the warm side of the wall. The bee took a fair share for its trouble. When the sun slipped behind the ridge, Brannoc found the lid had been pressed back on by someone careful, and Spring was asleep against his arm, snoring like a kettle. He left the jar where it stood, for the next traveller who came up the pass hungry.
