The doctor at the seaside sanatorium had a habit of tapping his pencil against his teeth, and on the morning Mrs Pellow arrived with her trunk and her parrot, he tapped it so often that the nurse had to hand him a fresh one. Mrs Pellow sat down opposite him, smoothed her gloves, and asked the question she had rehearsed on the train from Exeter. Have I gone mad? I'm afraid so, he said, after a decent interval. You're entirely bonkers. The parrot agreed loudly. Mrs Pellow nodded as if he had confirmed the price of coal, and the doctor, who had been waiting thirty years for a patient who took bad news so calmly, leaned forward and lowered his voice. But I'll tell you a secret, he said. The clock stopped because I stopped it. I wanted one room in this building where nobody had to hurry.

Mrs Pellow considered this with the seriousness of a woman who had buried two husbands and kept a shop through both wars. Then she unclasped her handbag, took out a tin of mint humbugs, and offered him one. All the best people are, she said, and the parrot, who had heard this at least a thousand times, repeated it with great satisfaction until the nurse came in to take them both to lunch.
