Red balloon tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small cartoon-style red balloon with a dark outline and a thin black string trailing downwards. The balloon has a soft highlight on its upper left side, and the linework is clean and even. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale lower leg against a dark garment and a patch of grass and leaves.

Her father stood at the gallery rail with the lamp still unlit behind him and did not shout. Everyone on the Skerry knew what a string could do. Out past the reef the sea kept what it was given, and the old people said a thing that went up from the rock would come down somewhere it could not be fetched.

She watched it until it was a dot, then a pinch, then nothing. In the spring a fisherman from Carrick climbed the path with a length of black twine in his coat pocket. It had come up in his nets off the eastern shoals, and tied to one end, though the rubber had gone soft and grey, was a small knot the girl knew for her own. She carried it up to the lamp room and fixed it to the brass rail, where the light caught it and sent it turning. Every boat that came home that summer, her father said, steered a little truer for it.
