Red bow tattoo on a shoulder
Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A photograph of a small red bow tattoo on the upper shoulder, with the bow's three lobes and centre knot filled in solid red with subtle darker shading. The wearer pulls a grey off-shoulder top down with one hand, which has pink painted nails, and the shot is cropped to the shoulder and arm against a dark background. The red ink is the clear focal point against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mara's mother pulled the red thread tight through her collar that morning and tied it off in a bow. "Three loops for the three hills you will climb," she said, "and a knot in the middle so the wind cannot undo you." The crossing at Hollin Ford was a plank bridge over a brown river, and the toll-keeper there, Abel Sworde, had a voice like a gate hinge and took no coin at all.

He stopped her at the first plank. "Red goes back," he said. "The king's men took every red thing across last winter, and the valley has been grey ever since." He turned out her basket with the end of his stick: bread wrapped in cloth, a horn comb, a letter sealed with wax. Then his eyes went to her shoulder, to the bow, and he stayed looking at it so long the river seemed to slow.
"It is only thread," Mara said.
Abel said nothing. He only held out his hand, and after a moment she unpicked the knot with her teeth and laid the thread across his palm. He wound it once around the iron rail of the bridge, tied it with a fisherman's hitch, and waved her on without a word. She crossed with her shoulder bare to the wind and did not look back until she reached the far bank.
In the morning the rail at Hollin Ford was bright red where the sun caught it. The carters stopped to touch it for luck, and children walked the planks with one hand trailing along the colour, and Abel sat on his stool counting the coins he never took.
