Red bow tattoo on the inner wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A red bow shape with two loops and a central knot is outlined in thick black ink on the inner forearm, close to the wrist. The red fill is solid with a slight sheen, and the black outline is heavy and even, giving the design a flat, graphic look. The hand is shown palm up against a dark purple cloth, with white nails patterned in small pink hearts and black marks.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tomasz, the wardrobe is shut up for the night and I am sitting among the rails with the radiator ticking, writing to you because you will not answer the telephone before ten. The red bow came back from the dyers this afternoon. The silk had gone stiff and dull, and Mrs Okafor stood in the workroom swearing it was ruined. I told her a bow is only two loops and a knot, and a knot can always be retied.

Ferris wanted the thing to read from the gods, all the way up to the back row, so we went over every edge in black, thick and even, like a strip in a comic. The effect is loud and a little silly, which is exactly what a pantomime needs. He signed off the drawing without looking up from his clipboard.

The surprise came when I unpicked the old lining to take the shape from it. Pinned inside the hem was a square of card, and on it someone in a neat hand had drawn the same bow with the loops counted out in pencil. Underneath was a name I did not know, the year 1961, and a small heart with the words tie it twice.

So I tied it twice, and it held. Now the bow sits on its stand under the work light, red as a pillar box, and the black edges catch the glow from the Deansgate lamps through the window. I thought you would like to know that some things are mended by people who never meet the ones who wear them.
