Zombie face and hand on two fingers

Hand · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of two fingers with cartoon zombie tattoos. The upper finger carries a green zombie face with white eyes and an open mouth showing teeth, and a green arm with clawed hand reaches across the finger. The lower finger has pink skin marked with red streaks and dark brown blood-like splatters, with a green hand reaching up from the side. Black outlines define the figures, and the background is a plain pale wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hush now, and sit where the lamp can reach your faces. Ada Pilcher, who ran the coconut shy at the Whitsun fair for thirty years, swore the two fingers in the glass jar were brothers, and that the trouble started over the last toffee apple on the Bexley green in nineteen eleven.

The green one was Eamon, and he was greedy. Every evening he climbed up his brother Lowell's knuckle and sank his teeth into the sugar crust, and every evening Lowell bled a little more red across the ticket box. The fairground folk called it the mess. Ada called it a family matter, and she kept the jar on the shelf above the bearded lady's teapot so nobody would have to watch.

By August the mess had spread to the carousel. Eamon's arm grew long and clawed, reaching for anything with sugar on it, and Lowell stopped pretending to be brave. He drew himself up to the brass rail of the ghost train, and he waited.

And here is the thing Ada never could explain. When the lamps went out at the end of the season, the jar was found with its lid unscrewed and the two fingers lying side by side, Eamon's claw curled gently over Lowell's back, as if he had finally got hold of something and let it go.

So mind your toffee apples, and mind your brothers.
