The fish had been promised to the pond by Mrs Okonedo's grandson, who had carried it home in a jam jar from the fair and then, when the jar cracked on the kitchen step, put it on the first thing he could find, which was a slice of bread. Nobody in the Pellow Road flat ever agreed on what happened next. The fish swore it had been a rescue. The bread swore it had been a raft. Gran said that a red fish with blue spots had no business being that cross about a crust, and she put them both on the windowsill to dry.

By Thursday the fish had decided the windowsill was a sea, and the bread was the last island in it. It spent the afternoon barking orders at a passing pigeon and asking the milk bottle for news from the north. The bread, who had been left out for three days and was getting a little crusty around the edges in both senses, said nothing at all, which the fish took as agreement.

On Friday the grandson came back for his jar. He found the fish sitting bolt upright on the bread, looking very pleased with itself, the way a captain looks after a long voyage that nobody else believed in. He tipped it into the jar with a sandwich bag over the top and carried it down the road to the pond behind the library, where the ducks ignored it entirely. The fish took this as a sign of respect and never once mentioned the bread again.
