Scooby-Doo characters and Mystery Machine on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The design shows Shaggy and Scooby-Doo peering out of a pale blue cloud beside the green Mystery Machine van, with its name written on the side. A masked figure in dark green and orange sits at the left edge of the composition. Bold dark outlines and flat, saturated colour fills give it a cartoon look, and the motif is placed on the outer thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dunmore Wick had never seen a van so green. It came up the lane at dusk with its headlamps off and its radio playing, and Ollie Reeve, nineteen and never further than the bus depot, stood in the car park of the Crooked Hen with a tray of glasses and watched it stop beside the bins. Out of the passenger door tumbled a long-limbed lad with hair like a burst hay bale, followed by a dog the size of a pony, spotted like a cracked egg, which made straight for the chip bin.

The lad, Wendell Stoke, said they were looking for the ghost in the Hen's cellar. Ollie told him there was no ghost, only Mrs Marrow's tabby, and Wendell went pale and clutched the dog's collar. The dog, whose name was Biscuit, ate three sausage rolls off the bonnet while they argued. Then a cloud of blue mist rolled out of the hedge, and a figure in a green mask and an orange cape rose from it, waving a torch and moaning, and both of them screamed in perfect harmony.

The figure turned out to be Terry Pascoe, the publican's brother, paid by the brewery to haunt the cellar so nobody asked for a wage rise. Wendell pulled the mask off with one long finger and found a man with a grin and a bag of flour in his pocket. The dog licked Terry's face and wagged so hard the whole van rocked.

They drove off at midnight with Terry in the back seat, still muttering about overtime, the engine coughing blue smoke over the hedge. In the morning Ollie found the car park strewn with chip papers, one unpaid bill for three hundred chips, and a single sausage roll left on the bonnet with a bite taken out of it by something that had clearly enjoyed the mystery.
