Script lettering on the wrist with a silver heart bracelet
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a wrist showing black script lettering that reads 'Wish you wer', with the end of the phrase cut off by the frame. A silver Figaro-style chain bracelet with a heart charm engraved with the word 'home' rests against the skin, and the blurred wooden background is out of focus. The lettering is crisp, with smooth, even linework in dark ink, and the warm light gives the shot a soft, natural finish.

Mags Tully had written the same postcard four times before the pen ran dry. The picture showed Brixham harbour, painted boats in tidy rows, and the fleet was out past the breakwater somewhere beyond the Start. She wrote "Wish you were" and stopped, because the sentence had a hundred endings and she only wanted one of them.

Her brother Danny had signed on the Ellen Rose in March, a grey stern trawler with a rust streak like a dropped sleeve. He'd sent one text in six weeks, saying the weather had been kind to the nets, which in Danny meant the hold was half full and nobody had drowned. Each evening Mags walked the quay with the silver heart he'd left on her kitchen table, the one their mum had bought from a stall in Torquay. She turned it over in her palm and read the word engraved on it. Home. Engraved, not stamped, so it wouldn't rub away.
The Ellen Rose came in on a Tuesday, low in the water, gulls screaming over the fish market. Danny came down the gangway with a sack over one shoulder and didn't look up until he reached the bottom. Then he held out his hand, and Mags realised she'd been gripping the postcard so hard the corner had gone soft and furry.
She finished the sentence on the quayside, the card pressed flat against a bollard. "Wish you were here," she read aloud, then crossed out the last word and wrote "home" underneath, the way you sign off a letter you never meant to post.
